Metal recycling – a service from start to finish

By Julian Foley, CCO at John Lawrie Metals

Do you have a complex decommissioning project? A site clearance that poses an array of challenges?

We believe there’s a simpler way to manage metal recycling: by having one organisation handle the collection, processing, and export.

At John Lawrie Metals, we take responsibility for every stage of the process, offering a straightforward single step Duty of Care assurance.

Unlike many other materials bound for recycling plants, steel is infinitely recyclable without there being any impact on the quality of product.

As huge offshore assets, subsea infrastructure and onshore materials continue to undergo decommissioning, having a single source provider which handles collection, downsizing and export is crucial to generating project efficiencies and lowering costs.

Our single step assurance fully meets Duty of Care obligations and provides a unique level of traceability and reporting through processing sites, the smelting plant and to the finished product. This is only possible as the material never leaves our custody throughout the entire process.

Such methods have resulted in a reduction in the time taken to complete works for our clients, without any compromise in safety standards. The enables quaysides or worksites to return to full use as soon as possible, and ensures that the value for recycled metal is realised as quickly as possible.

In one conversation I had with a customer, they said our specialist service was “less than 1% of the overall project cost, but 99% of the perceived liabilities”.

This statement reflects the importance of making sure that the correct operational management is in place when items are brought for downsizing, and that materials are routed in such a way to minimise any environmental risk.

When compared with offshore operations, the onshore aspect of decommissioning projects becomes very visible, and any failure in the Duty of Care can have serious financial and reputational implications on all parties.

Since 2022, we’ve been a part of the ArcelorMittal family and a major component  of its efforts to decarbonise the steel manufacturing process has been the development of its XCarb product line.

By processing metal through Electric Arc Furnaces powered by electricity which is 100% renewable generated, a steel is produced with a significantly lower carbon footprint per tonne figure compared to traditionally recycled steel, enabling customers to significantly reduce their Scope 3 emissions.
