The programme to decommission the Rose Field saw various subsea materials landed at the Port of Leith. This included a canopy that was too large for road transportation and required downsizing at the quayside, and a spool – fitted with sensors and valves – which was found to be NORM (naturally occurring radioactive materials) contaminated.

Project Summary
After being reduced in size, the canopy and other subsea materials were transported to our licensed metal treatment facility in Aberdeen for processing and recycling.
The spool, sensors and valves were transferred separately under the appropriate dangerous goods transport regulations to an authorised NORM specialist for treatment. Following decontamination, the sensors and valves were returned to our client for reuse, while the spool and other items were processed by us for recycling. A 98% recycling rate was achieved.
In common with all decommissioning projects, site specific method statements, risk assessments and operating procedures were prepared by our team and approved by the client and Port Authority prior to work commencing.
